As a kid, we lived in England for several years and every year during Christmas my parents would load all four of us up in the car and head off to the Pantomime. If you haven’t ever been to a British Pantomime, then you are really missing out. The Brit’s have that unique sense of humor and it is an annual tradition to take a classic children’s tale and turn it into hilarious theater – usually with a man starring as a female lead. My youngest sister who was 4 when we started going always enjoyed the show as much as the rest of us, including my parents.
So imagine my delight upon learning that there is a theater in Kensington, The British Players, putting on Mother Goose, tomorrow through December 13. Here is a quick description:
Pantomime takes a childhood fairy tale or story and delivers an engaging, deliberately over-the-top and hilarious entertainment suitable for children and adults. The “Dame” is always played by a man, and the Principal Boy – usually the hero – is traditionally played by a woman.
Tickets are affordable (as compared to say the Rockettes, where you have to drop like $35-$75 knowing your kid might want to leave 10 minutes in) – they are $10 for kids and $18 for adults and the times range from day time for kids to evening shows for older kids and adults. I plan to definitely go to the show and really can’t wait. Pantomime is a fabulous Christmas tradition and one that definitely shouldn’t be missed.
