I still can’t believe tomorrow is Thanksgiving….and with that comes the rush of holiday events…so let’s get started.
Mark your calendars for Merriment in Georgetown on Sunday December 6. Wisconsin Avenue will be closed between M and N Streets so that pedestrians can stroll and celebrate the season. There will be holiday music from kid-centric rocker Milkshake, the Holy Trinity School and Church choirs, and a rockin Jazz band. There will be horse-drawn carriage rides, costumed characters strolling the streets, lots of children’s activities, and, of course, a chance to meet Santa and tell him what a good girl or boy you have been this year.
The American Girl author, Valerie Tripp, will read from her phenomenally popular collection and there will be an American Girl Café complete with tea, hot chocolate and treats for the girls and their dolls. Many local retailers will be on hand sponsoring activities relating to both the dolls and other holiday themes. The Georgetown association’ s Oral History Project will host a booth at which you can record your favorite Georgetown Christmas memory to be consigned to posterity.
The evening will culminate with candlelight caroling at Wisconsin and M Streets. And a stroll down to the Harbour to see the Parade of Lights boat show and the lighting of the Harbour Christmas tree. Last year was a bit blustery but it was still a magical event. I’m looking forward to seeing Merriment become the area’s merriest holiday event. Mark your calendar. You won’t want to miss it.
New this year, the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Woodley Park is hosting a Teddy Bear Tea on December 13th and December 20th. The first seating is at 11:30am and the second seating is at 2pm. There will be a special 5 course menu for adults and kids, with the extra perk of a glass of champagne for adults. Santa and the Snow Princess will attend the tea and each child will receive a Teddy Bear. The Omni is asking attendee’s bring an unwrapped toy to donate to Children’s Hospital. Children age 4+ are $20 each, under 3 are free, and adults are $35. Call 202-234-0700 for a reservation.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Historic museum neighbors Dumbarton House & Tudor Place are so excited to participate in “Merriment in Georgetown”! We’ll have great old-fashioned games like hoops & graces (such fun to play in the middle of Wisconsin Avenue!) and crafts like making a cornucopia-candy ornament and Christmas card decorating. Look for us in the “my doll and me” tea party/cafe tent with “Quite a Stir”! Plus, start your weekend earlier at Dumbarton House with a traditional Wassail! An Annual Holiday Celebration at Dumbarton House, Fri, Dec 4, 7-9pm. Young and young-at-heart are invited to stroll through the festively-decorated rooms of the museum and learn about Christmas traditions in Washington during the Federal Period. Enjoy holiday music and delicious holiday treats. Kids crafts and activities including ginger cookie decorating until 8:30pm. Georgetown University’s popular and lively a cappella singers, Superfood, perform holiday favorites 7:30-8:30pm! Cap off the evening with the traditional hot beverage, wassail, an orange-spiced punch offered in celebration and good wishes for good health! Fee: Non-member $10 per adult; $5 per child. Member $5 per adult; children 12 and under, free. 2715 Q St, NW. Reservations suggested, 202-337-2288, Rsvp@DumbartonHouse.org. Hope to see you at BOTH activities! I’ll be there.
